And there was me convincing myself I didn't give a flying hero sandwich about the World Cup. I was just in the pub tonight, barely a camel's spit from where I live, & I couldn't take my eyes off the big screen. Nearly gave myself a stiff neck from all that tension. Here's a reminder of Cups past, courtesy of Stock, Hausen & Walkman & a glitched-up copy of the 1990 (per)version of 'Fog on the Tyne'.

"Sometimes I'm simply attracted to a kind of wonderful moment in an otherwise dreary piece. So I'll say to myself, 'What would it be like to go in & really examine this closely & see how it works, & see what can result from turning it inside out?'" - Carl Stone

Here's 'Banteay Srey', the opening track from Carl Stone's 'Mom's' CD. Perfect for any twilit evening or early sunrise. (16.2MB, 160Kbps)

EDIT: Just removed my Interests from the Info page because they made me sound like some kind of stoner eejit.

I acquired my first CD burner back in October 1999. Here's the track list from my first attempt at a CD-R compilation.

04:19 pm - Time for some preposterous shit.
The Rockabouts, 'She's A Fat Girl' (2.2MB, 160kb)
I first heard this one on the equally preposterous Legendary Lonnie's BBC Radio Stoke show one Sunday afternoon in 1987. It was a real hoot & still is.
03:43 pm - PIBLOKTO EMBROILED IN DELIBERATE BEER COLLAGE
My second eMPty3 offering on this blog is Pete Brown & Piblokto!'s last single on Harvest, available as bonus tracks on the Repertoire reissue of their 'Things May Come & Things May Go, But The Art School Dance Goes On Forever' debut. Between that album & this single they changed line-up almost entirely, with Jim Mullen (later to form Morrisey Mullen) replaced by one Brian Breeze & John 'Pugwash' Weathers (later in Gentle Giant) taking over from Rob Tait. The A-side, 'Flying Hero Sandwich', is a relentlessly rambunctious romp. Organ stabs, talking drums, & playful wordplay, set to a rollocking proto-Roobarb gallop, culminating in a sudden ending nearly as spooky as the one that terminated Mantronix's 'Scream'. The flip seems to be a tribute to Pete Brown's former bandmates in Battered Ornaments, and is a more restrained & sweeter sounding affair.
That's a really exciting description, innit? Sheesh, I'm just another Mojo hack...

At last, the dismayingly long-forgotten Mabuses have a dot com of their own. Saturated with Flash & not quite complete, but still entirely necessary. There's streams of a few unreleased (!!!) songs, plus info on their predecessors The Assassins.
The brain & lungs of The Mabuses, Kim Fahy, sort of disappeared previous to the release of their second album 'The Melbourne Method' in late 1994. He now seems to be residing in Paris, & has contributed to last year's 'Plus Le Sucre' album by French artist JP Nataf. Now to hunt for Papa Sprain....
Here's 'Diego No. 1' (5.84MB, 192kbps), the last song on side A of The Mabuses' eponymous debut. I was listening to this about an hour ago, & had to pause the disc for a few minutes afterwards until I'd stopped crying.

BONUS: The Assassins' only single for Rough Trade, 'Where's Joey Gone?', from late 1989. (2.63MB, 128kbps)
